I have always had a love for makeup! Ever since I can remember I have done anyones makeup that would let me! I was in Theater in High School and would dump my makeup out to do everyone else who went on stage! It was just in me.
I took Cosmetology in high school but found out the makeup portion of it, well, was less than beneficial in meeting my craving to learn the art. Upon Graduating High school I took a full scholarship on theater for theatrical makeup.
A semester into my first year at the young age of 18 I became a single mom. This stunted my dreams of a career as a makeup artist. By 19 I was married and by 26 had three children.
I went on a job interview with one of Houston's premiere makeup artists for a job. She then shared with me how crazy the hours could be and what it all entailed. At that point I made the decision to rear my children first and do what I felt was best for them. I would just put off pursuing my dreams until later..if at all. You know the old saying dreams don't come true reality does.Through all those years I kept my skills up by reading EVERY book I could find on makeup and painted murals.
When my youngest child started school, I decided that was the time to give my dream a shot. I talked to my husband explaining what all it would entail since I had been a stay at home mom and he would have to handle a lot whenever I was working. He was completely supportive.
I went back to the makeup artist I had spoken to in my early years. I was SO SCARED I would not be good enough because I had no "formal makeup training" that I almost didn't go, but my husband encouraged me as he always does. She hired me as a freelance artist. I worked with her studio for over a year. The experience and training I received on the job was invaluable to me. Working there taught me "the business" inside and out.
That was about six years ago. When I left her studio I started Your Makeup Expert. I always said I NEVER wanted to own my own studio. I just wanted to do makeup and get paid! Yet here I am. My next goal is to become a National and International Makeup Artist. Now that all the children are older I can freely travel.
I feel I have already "made it" as far as I can in Houston. I have worked on local celebrities here as well as national celebrities when they come to Houston. Some of my clients have included Dr. Oz, Connan O'brian, You Ming, Clay Walker, Mary Lou Retton, and several political and sports figures. I have done local as well as national commercials and tv. The wedding side of my business has flourished to the point that I have 4 other artists that work with brides and we have been voted The Knots Best of Weddings for 2010/2011.
I would love to experience and work with national level artists. I would love to learn and experience all that they are willing to teach. I would also love to show the God given talent and experience that I have been cultivating for the last 20 years. I truly feel because I gave my early years and time to my children that NOW is my time to LIVE MY DREAM as my REALITY!
So there is my past, my present, and my future! I hope that GoPretty.com and the Beauty Pro Awardhelps me take that next leap from dreamland to reality!
